Don't you guys mean Dragon Ball Z? Or Dragon Ball Z Kai? Or perhaps Dragon Ball GT? Or even Dragon Ball Super?
There are so many things called Dragon Ball, you have to specify which one you're talking about.
I would recommend Dragon Ball Z Kai, because it's shorter and more faithful to the manga than plain old DBZ.

If the 9 year old is sufficiently able to tell fiction from fact, he could be shown Death Note. It's like Sherlock Holmes, but in a modern setting with some fantasy elements.

i would recommend Dragon Ball Z Kai Abridged, because it goes for two minutes and King Kai tells Bojack to f**k off. and kids love swearing when they're not allowed to themselves.
