These are the only 6 animes I've seen to "completion". I just went to /a/ to ask for recs, but apparently they don't take too kindly to that. So I'm asking here now. They are roughly ranked, altough there are things I disliked about all of them. What would you rec to someone like me who hasn't seen many animes?

First off: What did you like and dislike about each of them? It's hard to give recommendations based on what you've seen alone without knowing what you like or dislike.
Second: The plural of "anime" is "anime". No S anywhere.
General advice: Stay as far away from recommendation charts and populariry rankings as you can, as those tend to follow a very narrow approach and suggest mostly bland mainstream choices.

it's mainly the latest season. I really liked the first three, but I don't like all the new lore in the fourth season. Also it seems like all of Arin's character development has completely gone out the window. Maybe they'll fix it with the last half of the season, but I've heard bad things about how the manga ended

I mainly thought the gimmick got old by the end of it, especially since Azuma Kazuma never really lost. It was still a comfy watch

Loved the plotting and escaping of the first season. Wasn't sold on the second season with them befriending demons and stuff. Absolutely hated the slideshow finale

Even as someone who doesn't watch a lot of anime, this felt extremely generic. The only good things were Nezuko and episode 19 (although they completely shit all over it with the following episode)

What I'm getting from this is that you like grander-scale stories over small-scale ones, and stuff that pushes the plot forward in shorter intervals. You probably enjoy darker things more than lighthearted ones.

Going off that, I'd say that late-80s to early-90s OVAs are where you'd feel most at home.
Maybe start with Devilman The Birth (1987) and Devilman The Demon Bird (1990).
Other things worth looking into are Angel Cop (1989), Wicked City (1987), Urotsukidouji (1987).
Somewhat less dark/violent things: Angel's Egg (1985), Gunbuster (1988).

A genre you might want to try checking out is mecha. Mazinger and Gundam being the big franchises. Shorter series and films, again, are probably better for your viewing experience than the longer series.

This was a logistics thing: they got told halfway through production that the last 7-8 episodes were going to be a movie, so they had to fill six episodes with nothing.

Ya do realise you have that the other way around? Black was the edgy spinoff that came out later.

S2 of hataraku saibou is an extended advert for Yakult, where ordinary-cell goes on a road trip putting the cute baby helpful bacteria back where they belong, and the actual cast sometimes has cameos.

Forgot to mention that I watched those shows with over 100 animes already seen. And I've enjoyed all these 6 shows, more than almost all the animes put together.

Mazinger and most of animes from the 70s aren't proper for a newcomer because of hard-to-swallow episodism.
There's a lot of stuff between shows and OVAs from the 80s and 90s
Would suggest Votoms (from what I've started), the Escaflowne show, Five Star Stories OVA (suggestion to check the manga too), Planetes, Patlabor...

Mazinger has more than just that one 70s series. To be fair, you can make a sensible argument that the newer, shorter and less episodic installments aren't the best way to get into the franchise (same for Gundam). Of course, the different things you suggested do make sense as well, but they might be a bit hit-and-miss for him.

No. He just meant that it goes on for a long time and doesn't strictly develop the main plot with each episode, but has what many would nowadays class as "filler" and what was traditionally considered exposition, character development, establishing ambience, themes and metanarratives and so on. Often following a bit of a formula. You don't get that in contemporary 12-episode-season anime anymore, and contemporary audiences tend to be too impatient, especially when they're more used to binging many series in a short time instead of watching something weekly over a year.

I'm more of a film watcher than a series watcher, so I don't really binge like most people. I don't mind just watching an episode here and there, and I don't mind some filler as long as the show stays interesting. I watched most of DBZ a while ago with all the filler, and I didn't mind it too much. I never finished it though which is why it's not on my chart in the OP

I've seen a couple anime movies, but I was looking for some good series to watch as well. Also it seems a lot of the highly rated anime movies are tie-ins with series, so I was trying to figure out which ones might be worth watching. Here's my current anime movie 3x3

Yeah I've seen a good amount of the "classics". Mainly Studio Ghibli stuff, but here's everything I've seen labeled "Japanese animation" on letterboxd. I still have a few more on my watchlist too, but I was just curious about some good series to watch

From reading the thread I think you might enjoy something like Kaiji, since it's a pretty good thriller with mind games and high stakes, similar to the plotting of Neverland. One Outs might also be something you'd enjoy if you enjoyed Kaiji since it's the same thing but with baseball.

Monster might be another thing you'd enjoy, it has a western feel to it as well if you're more of a movie watcher. A good thriller/drama. Although, it's 74 episodes long if that's an issue.

As another anon said, watch Bebop and if you enjoyed that maybe give something like Trigun or Outlaw Star a try too.

If you liked the adventure aspect of Laputa, give something like Nadia The Secret of Blue Water or Takarajima a shot. Also, if you enjoyed Cagliostro, Lupin Part IV + V would probably be something you'd love as well.

Like some anon wrote in other thread, he could just get into it and maybe discover more stuff, he could get into more stuff naturally.
Also could mention the El-Hazard series and Gasaraki.

Some of his many suggestions might be right up your alley, some others you will probably not enjoy. The main point is that his suggestions weren't tailored at you, but just his own favourites, which he recommends to everyone. You can try following his list, but that'll be no more or less successful than following any other list you find.
