Dearest /wsr/,

I have kind of an obtuse request, but do you guys think you could recommend me some Anime (you) personally found "Emotionally Meaningful" or otherwise "Evocative"?
I'm not looking for 'Nostalgia', but stuff you saw that had a big impact on you or maybe you'd consider 'Art' in some way.

Some of my own examples, just to help, include:

It's been a very long time since I've seen it, but I still remember the emotional impact from watching Shigofumi. It's quite short, only 12 episodes, but it hits pretty hard.

other than that, you should watch girls last tour, shiki, anohana, and you should play some visual novels because i know those are good for emotional fuel

Seconding "Memories". The first short, "Magnetic Rose" is definitely the best.

Did they ever dub it? I've got a friend that won't watch subbed anime, and I've been waiting for them to do a dub for years so he can watch it.

I've actually watched Memories and absolutely love it.
My favorite part was the cannoneer part, followed by the stink bomb one. Magnetic Rose is definitely super good though.

Wikipedia says you're in luck: the 2021 blueray release has an english dub. I'd be keeping my eyeballs peeled on a torrent sometime soon.

I've seen every Ghibli film, but thanks for mentioning Fireflies.
Every WW2 anime film from the perspective of the civilians has managed to fuck me up: Grave of The Fireflies, In This Corner of the World, and Barefoot Gen were all really good.

Probably, yeah.
Anything that made you cry, has carved out a devoted portion of head space, or you otherwise just felt exhausted but thankful after watching it. Stuff like that.

Does manga count? If so, Spirit Circle. I never imagined lines of text and black and white drawings could make me cry so hard. Absolutely can't wait for the anime.

Okay.

This is a story...about bondage. About two high school students, a boy and a girl, who have grow up in apartments next to each other. About a short, somewhat unattractive boy who is sort of a bondage and porn 'otaku' and a beautiful, popular, top of her class girl, who he has always been in love with. Both with no romantic experience. They're not boyfriend and girlfriend. They don't have sex. They don't kiss. It's about the things they say to each other, and do with each other, and feel about each other.

I know this might not sound very appealing. It kind of sounds like a dirty hentai plot at first - the kinda gross guy and the super amazing girl. But again, let me say this is 100%, 1000%, 10,000,000% a *love* story. Yes, it's erotic, but it's absolutely about the love they have for each other. Both of these characters are incredibly *good* people who put *so* much affection, and *so* much care, and *so, so, so* much love into their relationship.

A couple of things, first, if this has caught your attention.

First of all...the first 'arc' (so the first 15 chapters or so) is maybe not fantastic. The way things 'start' between these two characters makes the boy look like a little bit of a creep. I promise that it won't last.

Secondly...together, the two of them do things that are very scary for her. Bondage is completely new for the girl and she knows nothing about it. She never knows the details before they start. When she walks into his room, she never knows what she's going to experience or what she's going to feel. (But she does choose to walk into his room.) He is incredibly caring, and incredibly careful to make sure that she is safe and comfortable. But...ultimately, she puts her complete trust in him to take of her, knowing he easily *could* hurt or abuse her.

She lets herself fall, and she trusts that he will catch her.

I'm telling you this as a warning. If you think that couples should never ever, ever do anything unless they both know exactly what's going to happen, unless they both are 100% comfortable at all times, then you definitely might not enjoy this. She does choose to participate, and he absolutely never tries to force her into doing something she genuinely doesn't want to do. But - it is scary for her.

The name of the story is Nana to Kaoru. The main story is about 150 chapters. There are also two 'sequels' that, as of right now, are about 60 chapters total together.

If you're interested, let me know. It's a long story that will take you awhile to get to the end, but you absolutely need to read the sequels in a very specific order to get the best experience, and not get spoiled early.
