Bored and haven't watched Anime in years, only just re-watched Steins;Gate. Looking for more serious shows, nothing about a kid waking up to his entire school wanting to fuck him for example.
Shows I've seen.

Well you should do that, because Bebop is great. but if it simply didn't vibe with you that's understandable too.

If you at all like Cowboy Bebop i also recommend Samurai Champloo. its one of my favorites and its a nice comedic/but can get serious "destination isn't what matters its the journey" type show.
Highly recommend full metal alchemist if you haven't seen that. you've probably already heard of it and it doesn't need much explanation. its pretty serious. the soundtrack is filled with dramatic orchestra and piano melodies that set the mood well. one of the best soundtracks of any anime IMO, including the openings and ending songs.
I also recommend Terror No Resonance. this is another pretty serious anime about Terrorism, and is one of the lessor known shows out there. i liked it, even though i was kinda disappointed that no one actually dies from the terrorism itself. its still very dramatic.
I know you said you wanted something serious, but Space Dandy is just too charming of a show not to recommend, so watch a few episodes to see if its your thing or not.
Mushishi is a very calm and comforting show about ghost based on japanese folklore. you could consider it a serious show, but it might bore you. its one of my favorites as well.
Id also highly recommend Darker than Black, do you at all like Batman or the premise of Batman? you'll probably like Darker than Black. Chinese immigrant in Japan with super powers hunts other individuals with super powers known as "contractors", who pay a "price" for their powers in the forms of things they must do, (can be anything from smoking, to feasting off the blood of children). its a dark moody show, with lots of jazz and rock music and cool fight scenes shrouded in mystery. I don't recommend the second season though, that was shit.

Great taste on death note and steins gate.

Yeah I plan too, it was only when I made the post I realised I never finished it.

Don't mind the whole Batman thing, I'm a fan of a the almost noire setting Batman has sometimes.

Haha I guess, those were the shows everyone talked about when I watched anime years ago, glad I did watch them, they're great.

Seconding stand alone complex, but I think it is better to watch the original ghost in the shell movie first. I started out trying watch SAC and couldn't get into it, until I watched the movie. I haven't read the manga yet but that's supposed to have more of a focus on world-building than the movie, which might (?) also be beneficial before going into SAC. I know one problem I had with SAC was that it felt like I was supposed to know certain things about the world it takes place in but I didn't, and I don't know if that's because I didn't read the manga or if it was because it's just made like that.

Not anime, but Kamen Rider shows between 2000 to 2005:
Kuuga and Agito are so thriller
Ryuki and Faiz were really emotional imo
There's Blade
And Hibiki could be the most unique and different, not only for this franchise, but the entire genre

Mecha series with good characters and god-tier atmosphere and setting, also ends with some interesting psychological stuff

Good episodic series with fun dialogue and good designs, it has a lot of moving parts so it always feels like something is happening and the ending is god-tier
>Berserk
The adaptation is incomplete, but what is covered is very high quality and rivals good western dramas like Breaking Bad
>Jojo's Bizzare Adventure
A bit dumb but very fun, especially the first three parts

You will probably binge this in 3-4 days, it is that engaging
>Yamato 2199
Very good space opera, with a charming cast and some moments that hit really hard. The space fights are also glorious
>Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu
The first season is a great drama, the second season is not as good but still a decent resolution)
>Code Geass
It isn't the most well written series, and it gets ridiculous at points, but it is a good wild ride with a great ending. I think it will help if you look at it like a theatrical play, where things like deus ex machina are more accepted and the performances are somewhat exaggerated
>Puella Magi Madoka Magica
The characters are a bit flat, but the plot is very good. The artstyle and the music are also great. Don't be discouraged by the "girly" premise
>Welcome to the NHK
Very unique, a story about a shut-in NEET written by a shut-in NEET that shows how miserable that situation is. The ending is underwhelming, but this is more of a journey kind of show
>Space Dandy
Anthology of space adventures, I guarantee you that you will find at least 2-3 god-tier episodes there

The dialog is engaging and the characters have a good amount of depth, but I can't recommend this wholeheartedly. You will probably not like all of the characters, so the arcs of the ones you don't like might bore you, and the MC is unironically a pedo with incestuous tendencies. If you stomach some cringe scenes revolving around that aspect of his, you will find a pretty good series
>Shin Sekai Yori
Really cool worldbuilding and interesting plot, but the characters have no substance. If you need a story to have good characters, don't even bother
>Kill la Kill
A worse Gurren Lagann, both in the hype and the character department. However it is still fun and worth a watch
>Mob Psycho 100
A coming of age shonen anime with pretty good characters. The comedy is also on point. I am hesitant to recommend this because the second half of the second season is a battle arc that just drags on and on, if you don't like this sort of thing you might get bored
>Psycho-Pass
The first half is a decent crime procedural in an interestring setting, the second half is a good thriller. It is a good show, but IMO it doesn't do anything special, so leave it for last
>Fate/Zero
Pretty interesting battle show, with some cool edginess. I am not sure it holds up though, I watched it when I was 15 so I might have thought better of it than it really is

Terrible ending of Seasons 4 Part 1?
I've just finished Season 4 Part 1 and it was information overload compared to all the previous seasons. Also a complete shift in pacing an tone. Just all over the show as they retroactively explain things and jump between years to do so.
Still probably one of the best animes with a very serious story and few anime tropes and anime grunting. Can recommend OP sticking with it per their tastes. Though Winter 2022 is when the final season comes out so no rush.

I've finished the show but not the movie (end of eva) and the last couple of episodes were the characters taking turns having an identity crisis and associated mental breakdown. Completely fucking lost me.

Shinsekai yori is one of my favourites. Somewhat agree with the characters though there are quite a few of them and only a single season so something had to suffer? As you say, world building is great. I can wholeheartedly recommend this one OP, but for me the show didn't pick up until about episode 12 or so though there are some decent bits prior to this. I'd suggest watching an episode every now and then to start - it isn't engrossing enough at the start to binge watch.

Made in Abyss per your tastes and the third movie (first two are recaps). Excellent world-building, atmosphere, mystery and pretty good character development. Not a fan of the character desings myself but that's about the only bone I can pick.
Did you watch Steins: Gate Season 2? I got a bit peeved with the moping and incoherency towards the end of season 1. The OVAs and such were awful and two episodes of seasons 2 were enough to convince me to drop it all together.

It tells you in the ED that bondage-loli will be fine, because like Arthur Dent, she's not met Stavro Mueller yet, but that doesn't stop it spending episode after episode putting her through fake peril

MC is literally a reanimated corpse that wants to go to the bottom of the abyss because everything that comes out the corpse reanimator wants to go to the bottom of the abyss. This doesn't bother her, or anyone around her.

My only issue is the final 2 minutes. The movies are straight bad. I don't mind about the cheap silicon graphics and brings "da z0wl" and the feel of being creatures out of reality.

I thought the last two eps were interesting but they didn't satisfy me. Watch the movie ASAP, it is an actual ending
