I think they probably took it as tranny related as troon wasn't a word for tranny at that point, so they understood they were being insulted but just failed to realize it was a real word and not just some funny demonym for /pol/fags I'd created. A year or so after that, I started seeing it and thinking they were using the coward sense improperly only to find out their argument amounted to "trannies!"
