Yuasa's kinda the gateway hipster anime director, so maybe start with some of his works. Tatami Galaxy's a favorite, but you Mind Game, Cat Soup (though he's technically not the director in this one) and Kemonozume are no slouches either.
The anthologies are fun, so check out Neo Tokyo, both of the Genius Parties, and Ani*kuri15.
It's hard to compare those subcultures to the anime listed here, but some of my personal favorites are Alien 9, Angel's Egg, and Dead Leavies.
