1) Current Libreoffice provides much better MS Office compatibility than OpenOffice yet both applications are much lighter than any MS365 implementation there is if you only want to create documents and not join Teams etc MS dominated environment but only deliver docs.
2) Old laptop, well:
a) max 5 to 6 years old laptop then Linux Mint for Linux beginners
b) older than 6 yo, then Lubuntu
LibreOffice actually runs on both of these. Been there done that.
