also on the theme of "from scratch", picrel is a programmable computer built in the cellular automaton known as "wire world". it's like conway's game of life but with different rules. picrel is also cool to me since it introduced the concept of Transport Triggered Architectures (TTA) to me, which is like a CPU design where the only operation is the MOV op.
