boomer getting into anime since not watching it for a decade. Just finished Dorohedoro and Made in Abyss, and throughly enjoyed both. What are some more creative animes made in the last ten years?

Attack on Titan was the first anime I've watched in two decades that impressed me. Great music, visuals, distinct setting, classic hero's journey. The first three seasons are high tier anime. If you do end up checking it out, I hope you enjoy it.

op here, i want to thank everyone for their contributions. One problem with the set up for this board, is helping other people out kills your own threads. So this is a justified bump for my service.

for older animes i like all the old classics that ran on adultswim, that sort of crap. Basically i just don't have time anymore for video games, it takes too long to "get in the mood". Anime on the other hand gets to the point quickly, and unlike netflix shit has less annoying stuff in it.

Aquarionfag, do I really have to go through the entire trilogy? This picture is great, but if this sort of balls-to-the-wall powerlevel isn't present in the first 52 episodes I'm not interested.

Logos (third entry) is stand alone although the first episode was double billed with the epilogue of Evol (second entry) with guest appearances of the alternate universe OVA cast from the first entry. Also ignore >>1115685 the first entry was not low budget, it was a testbed for effects for Macross Frontier (same people that made the Macross franchise worked on Aquarion, Nobunaga The Fool, and Unit Pandora; also M3 but man that jumps around a lot and you need an acquired taste for horror mystery).

Alright but a word of warning that Logos is a turn your brain on title, it won't seem like it but it does delve deep into communication and linguistical theories at a college level.... It also has things like the internet being physically set on fire and one episode being a big Ghostbusters tribute.

There's a genre of uncreative escapism anime, isekai, where the self-insert guy gets transported to a fantasy world and gets all the ladies and has overpowered abilities.
Just for the sake of seeing of what it's all about, I'd say watching at least a season of Sword Art Online is worth it. It's not a traditional isekai, but it has the same ideas at its core. The bland mary sue MC and obvious fanservice aside, the concept is actually pretty interesting.
A scientist comes up with a VR headset that can connect to your brain, and essentially place you into an MMO he made. Thousands of people pre-order it and log in day 1. Turns out, the console is designed to fry your brain if you die in-game.

Even though isekai's a tired, worn-out genre for us, for a returning watcher it's a pretty new concept.
Re Zero, Drifters are some of the actually good isekais. There's Rising of the Shield Hero, which attempts to de-construct some of the genre's tropes, but it's amateurish, lazily written. Re Zero does a better job.

It's a simple fantasy template. It's the opposite of what the op is asking for (creative stuff), but that doesn't mean they're necessarily lame. They're only lame when they're lazily built, but we can get some with fantastic characterization or excellent world building. Heck some of them somehow turn out good, when every part seems deficient, like By the Grace of the Gods. Such is the case when you're throwing enough spaghetti against the wall, something will defy expectations and stick

Op shouldn't watch any yet though, he has actual good stuff to work through first. SAO is trash, Re:Zero is trash. Fuck, you need to dig to find ones that (you) like

Isekai protagonist:
- is more easily relatable, because he's a normal guy from japan with normal japanese life experience and japanese motivations
- allows a direct and overt contrast between fantasy world (which is often a metaphor for how japan was or how japan could be) and everyday japan, instead of having to use allegory like star trek
- can just ask questions the viewer wants the answer to, instead of having to try to make exposition seem natural
Isekai setting
- makes it easy to insert powerlevels, which are actually good for storytelling because they establish the viewer's expectations*.
- lets them skip over a bunch of unnecessary exposition because everyone's already familiar with it: Ass-Dragon didn't even have an opening episode because everyone is so familiar with isekai they could get the whole "OMG A MAGIC PORTAL" bit over with in two seconds of intro.

* Contrast Mondaiji.... which didn't use them, then tried to have a climactic battle even though the protagonists had been pubstomping everyone for the past ten episodes. There was never any tension because it had thoroughly vanquished the idea that it was even possible for them to not win.

But anyway, it should be obvious that if something is easier to do, that makes it easier to do well. It's easier to make rice krispy squares than it is a risotto, so it's much more likely that a random rice krispy square will be good.
