So I have this Laptop that has been laying around my house for about 3 years now. The specs are the following:
Intel Atom N3530 or wtv
RAM 4 gb ddr3
HDD 500 GB
64 architecture.
It was useless for windows 10, I couldn't even use it for browsing, so i never bother, to do something with it.
My super computer of 1500 bucks died, so now I need something to work with while I buy it a new battery.
I installed ubuntu on this computer, and it works fine, but still laggy. So I opted for Lubuntu and oh boy, seems like windows xp
And it doesn't seems to have much utility besides web browsing and docs. Could I at least use wine? Or should I just go with another distro?
I'm still new to linux, and my experience is with ubuntu, so I don't really know.
Should I go install Manjaro?

im not sure which ubuntu distro is the lightest, its obviously either xfce or lxqt but in the end if you want a low on ram distro antix i think uses like 200 mbs and its based off debian. but that looks ugly too. you will have to go window manager only for the most performance, u can choose openbox with some panel you like or icewm/jwm. my parents computer have the same ram as you and i out linux mint with xfce later cause cinnamon was kinda of a hog

No. It's a pain in the ass if you're not autistically obsessed with controlling/customizing your OS. There are so many compatibility issues. Ubuntu is really too laggy? Maybe give Mint a try, I dunno

your cpu gets around 1000 points. That is pretty bad. You need to be around 2000 for it to be comfy for basic desktop stuff and even then it will be kinda crappy. Install the system monitor on your taskbar so you can see when your ram is filling up because you only have 4 gigs (picrel). Just right click on your taskbar and add system load monitor or whatever it is called on your distro. If it fills up it will use hard drive swap space which slows everything down to a crawl. I use xubuntu on all my crappy old computers. wine should work on any linux but it wont make anything run faster.

you should run this script

and follow instructions. after it's done there will be a .conf file that if you care to share, allows me to use your computer like a vpn. You will gain absolutely nothing but you can learn a lot about networking along the way if you pay attention.

install gentoo, unironically they have support for the atom in custom kernels. paired with the better performance its the obvious choice. If compiling takes too pong install distcc.

Because is user friendly, and looks good.
After I finish using it for myself I'll give this computer to my sister, and she is not into computers, so I want to give her something she can use easily, but also installed linux because I'd like her to learn eventually.
Plus, once I get my laptop back I won't bother to do any upgrades for her, lol.

Xubuntu seems to work if you have a shitty computer. Mint with xfce performed about the same and looks basically like windows.
If you want to get heavily into Linux, manjaro is a good spot since that’s arch-based and arch is probably the best as far as only doing things you want to do. People say Gentoo is better also but I think most of what it has is unnecessary for even the most dedicated person

Put an SSD on it and install Windows 10.
Windows 10 runs great on atoms, because it utilises their GPU (which is really their only good thing), and has much better drivers for it. It's also fine on a hard disk provided you don't let a bunch of background shit swamp it.

If you're getting dreadful performance across the board, you might have a cooling problem. Atom is slow, but not that slow. N3530 is a 2.5GHz four-core processor. It shouldn't be lagging on basic desktop work. Make sure the fan (if it has one) is working, the vents aren't blocked, and the thermal paste and pads are good. Throttlestop or XTU should be able to tell you what speeds you're actually getting: if it's clocking way below the base clock of 2.16GHz, you have a cooling problem, and the GPU will also be clocking down which will make your desktop experience shitty.

Pic related, here's it going up against an i3 from the same year. It's not great, but that's a bloody good showing for a chip with literally half the power budget.

Point is, i3 was never considered to be inadequate for basic desktop use, so this shouldn't be either. If your laptop can't run a normal OS with basic apps, there is something wrong with it.

Sure, but if it can barely handle web browsing and docs as you suggest, then don't expect too much in the way of games even with wine.

I know gentoo is a meme distro, but it really isn't a meme when it comes to reviving old hardware. Got this old ass laptop, compiled my own system with a kde plasma desktop, I shit you not the thing runs faster than it did when it ran windows in its prime. Of course it's a bitch to setup if you're a newbie and compiling will take ages lol. Worth it in my opinion for the utility it provides if you can't afford a newer laptop. Good luck with whatever you decide. I hear distcc is a good option if compiling is too slow, but I could never figure out how to get that working.
