New to anime (aside from the extremely popular casual shit like Dragon Ball)

What are some good titles to watch? I'd prefer more recent titles but I'm open for older if good and isn't 1000 episodes long.

If you don't care what you watch just browse /a/ or r/anime for titles and watch them, anything that stays bumped to the top of the boards is going to have an active scene for you to enjoy if that's all you care about.

For some good -INTRO ANIMES- start with the must-watch classics like FMA: Brotherhood, Steins;Gate, Death Note, Attack on Titan.
All great starters and will keep you interested.

Not anime but really got me some "enlightment", the Kamen Rider shows between 2000 to 2005

Avoid these at all costs:
Made in Abyss, Future Diary, Toradora, Danganronpa, anything SAO, anything Monogatari, anything Fate/, anything by Urobuchi (Madoka, Aldnoah.Zero)
Honestly I've been deeply dissapointed with every nine out of ten shows from the last decade, even though someone might think I belong to geriatrics

If you're looking for dumb entertainment without much depth then sure watch popular shounens (HxH, FMA, etc). AoT is gonna finish soon so might be a good time to jump on the hype train.

If you're looking for depth then anime isn't the place to look for, but as for some more mature shows, I like:
>Bakemonogatari
First season of monogatari series, might not be to your taste. Many people say you have to watch more anime to enjoy it since it plays with tropes, but that's simply untrue, especially if you can read between the lines. There are always 1-3 monogatari threads up on /a/, plus countless references to it.
>Clannad
Some people don't like the first season, but I loved both equally. More of a slice of life and slow paced type of show. Good comedy, good build up of relationships, and if you watch it to the end you're probably bound to cry.
>Haibane Renmei
Slice of life and slow paced as well, in an interesting setting.
>O maidens in your savage season
Show about horny girls but surprisingly good
>Kaguya-Sama: Love is war
Rom-com that's actually both funny and cute. Manga is up and running and has constant threads on /a/
>Made in Abyss
Incredible world and engaging story. New season coming up soon which is going to catch up with the manga.
>Spice and Wolf
Funny and cute story between a merchant and a wolf deity in a middle age european ish setting

some of the first titles i read were ElfenLied, ToLove-Ru,Kämpfer für die Liebe
elfenlied: i can really recommend but if you only watch the anime you will be a little disappointed by the ending
tlr: is very light hearted funny romcom
kämpfer: same as tlr but shorter...
Blue Exorcist is great too for beginners
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is a must watch as well
if you are an escapist and like sword art online, matrix etc. you might also like accel world
