The people on /a/ said I can't ask for anime recommendations there and to go here.
I just finished Evangelion and loved it. I don't know much about anime aside from the really big ones that almost everyone knows. I don't think I necessarily want more of the same "chosen kid pilot mecha" genre, but similar in tone or theme. Willing to get a bit more weird in a serious manner--I liked the last two episodes of Evangelion.
I enjoyed the aesthetic of it, the artwork in a lot of the backgrounds and in detail work, the weird esoteric shit with the Angels, the attention given to building the characters progressively throughout the series.
