Will decent to good anime in general still have that magic if I get into them at 26? I missed out on them when I was younger but I keep hearing they're a medium that's only good when you're a kid or teenager.

Hard to say, depends on your personality.
TTGL for example I liked back then, but now when I try to watch it again, just doesn't hold up now that I've gotten older, in my opinion.

The older I get, the more I appreciate genuine and emotional stories rather than something that's just trying to be cool.

There are many genuine emotional stories in manga, the problem is that manga/anime have a sort of "basic cringeness" that might put some people off, specially anime with the corny Japanese voices.

As for you OP, I recommend you Sonny boy, if you like it then there's some hope.
