So i watched the first gundam movie a while back and I guess I'm to much of a zoomer to enjoy the that old animation, but I like the idea and still want to watch gundam stuff.
Any recommendations for gundam anime that isn't from the 70s or 80s?

Victory is standalone and the best of the Universal Century timeline. G Gundam, Gundam Wing, Gundam X, Gundam SEED and Destiny, and Gundam 00 are better than most UC stuff and are all alternate universe. If you want a condensed version of the UC timeline just watch Gundam Age. Avoid Iron Blooded Orphans and Hathway's Flash like the plague. For the Build shows those are more real worldy and watching older stuff beforehead is heavily recommended. Divers entries are better than Fighters entries. G-Reco and Turn A are only liked by snobs and watching the pre-90s stuff is required.

I have had a similar problem watching early gundam.
In the 70s and 80s anime was developing at such a break neck speed that the painting department and clean up animators were lagging behind the animation significantly. This resulted in a final product that failed to draw the full potential from the layouts and keyframe art.
It really helped me be able to see the work in a better light to watch this video by hideaki anno putting some layouts and keyframes next to some finished cuts.

Watch War in the Pocket, I guarantee you'll enjoy it more than something like Gundam Age, which will just make you angry.

Among many other issues, HF had some of the worst lighting in anime history and for a movie the animation was subpar, visuals are not a reason to see it.
