Good afternoon, anons!
I decided I wanted to try and learn the language, but I feel stuck.
I memorized Hiragana and Katakana and a friend gave me a Genki Textbook. After attempting to go through it I feel nothing sits with me.
So of course I tried Duolingo. A few words stick with me yeah however I think it should go faster.
Maybe I'm just being too hasty?

Are you doing the exercises? If you're not getting practical use out of the stuff you're memorising, then it's just memorisation, and it's not going to gel together in your mind.

Alternatively, it could be that the fluffy "Japanese doesn't really mean anything" approach of Tae Kim (which is present in Genki, albeit to a lesser extent) isn't compatible with you, in which case try Stage Step or Cure Dolly.

Duolingo is terrible for actually teaching you things, but it's great for making sure they stay remembered. I would suggest looking at the duolingo lesson contents, learning it somewhere else, and using duolingo to make sure you're still remembering it.

The mass immersion approach seems to have worked for a lot of people, so maybe try that one.

this. sometimes i skim through duolingo lessons just so i can look at the comments, because they actually teach you things. also, try the tofugu website for learning specific things.
