4chanX or vanilla? For 4chanX you can use:

img.catalog-thumb { opacity: 0; }

For vanilla you can use:

#threads .thumb { opacity: 0; }

In both cases the thumb will be made fully transparent so you won't be able to see the image, but you'll still be able to click it in order to open the thread

OP, you might also want to disable 4chanx "Catalog image hover" option in wrench so you won't reveal the image unintentionally
Or not, seems like a good feature for when you're curious enough

not op but for things like this, do you have to use a plugin like stylish/stylus? or is there a way to implement it without an extension?

can you do this in threads?
like not just the thumbnail but make the actual image fully transparent?

i figured out you can block all images by blocking i.4cdn.org on your browser
