I'm not sure if this is the right board, but I'm a retard in regards to VPNs so some questions.

1. Is it really worth it? Is it advisable?
2. What risks do I exactly run if I don't use a VPN?
3. 4chan blocks proxies, right? Does this mean I have to turn off my VPN whenever I use 4chan?
4. The VPNs I most often see shilled on YouTube are (in order) Nord, SurfShark and Atlas. Which one of these is most advisable? Alternatively, is there a different one that's less shilled but better?

Any other general information on VPNs and why I should/shouldn't use them is welcome as well.

absolute bottom line is do you feel putting $4-10 a month (or whatever) is worth the safety you feel you are getting from it.

This being said they don't provide any real safety. Anonymity sure, but I'd ask the question again then. Is it worth the "anonymity" you're getting.

If you feel exposed or unsafe without one then you should have your own reasons and not need an explanation on why you feel that way then just weight out whether it's worth it or not.

The shitty thing about them is obviously they'll throttle your internet to some degree so if you're a heavy downloader they probably wouldn't keep up with the entire bandwidth your ISP is offering (even though I've never used one I just suspect this is how vpns are modeled).

As far as picking since I don't know any I'd personally just roll dice on one that's mentioned on a list of top VPNs and still cheap since the most I'd expect out of it is a bit of anonymity (and still knowing they are liable to send my browsing data and logs over the fbi if I ever get them into some heat).

I recommend taking a look at torrentfreak's list of vpns that (claim to) respect your privacy.

If you want to use torrents, pay attention to question 7 in particular.

Port forwarding lets you receive incoming connections directly, without nat punching, so it can be very useful if you want to host stuff, besides helping with p2p.

Just whitelist sys.4chan.org and whatever server serves the captcha. Or buy a pass.
