My laptop has recently began turning off suddenly on at least 3 occasions since a month ago. Whenever I turn the laptop back on, it begins a windows update. I usually update my laptop as soon as I notice an update is available, so I don't know why it's doing this.
I have windows 10. The laptop is an acer aspire 7, ryzen 7 processor. IT typically only turns off when I am doing something, not when the laptop is idle. My drivers are all up to date as of last month when I first encountered the issue. Otherwise, I have no other issues with the laptop.
Is this how Microsoft now forces you into updates? Anyone have an idea about what may be going wrong? Should I just install gentoo?

I'll admit that I have no idea how to interpret all the stuff in the event viewer, but there must be something up if it's listing that I had 49 errors and 56 warnings in the past 24 hours. The source of the error for most is "service control manager".

you can install acer's autoupdate software on their website to get the latest drivers if thats what's causing it. or you could do it manually using the model number

I'm an undergrad who relies heavily on using microsoft apps like word, power point, and excel, so I don't think I'll be able to switch to a linux OS anytime soon. Thanks for the rec though.

Linux does have very good open source equivalents of all programs (libreoffice etc) that you could take a look at.

Or just use wine... it has gotten better...

"very good" is subjective.
I just tried to make a sheet of labels in Writer, and found:
- you can't change the position of multiple text boxes to a specific number, you have to move them one-at-a-time. So you need to use the position dialogue 21*2=42 times, not 7+3=10 times
- you can select text boxes by tab, but some of them just remove themselves from the tab order, never select no matter how many times you use tab, and you have to click them with the mouse
- sometimes copy/pasting a text box doesn't work: the new text box just never pastes, and you have to save the document, and restart Writer
- saving the document as .docx and loading it again moved all the labels up and left, so they all needed to be moved back again before it could be used to print labels
And this was just one reasonably basic task. I'm sure a different basic task would uncover a different way that not-Office is a pain in the arse.

It's possible*, but
a) this is still a discoverability issue. If the simplest way to make "21 whatevers that line up with the 21 labels that peel off the paper so you can just type in what you want the labels to say and it'll print them on the labels" isn't obvious, then this is still an issue with the software
b) people in this thread were saying Writer is an easy replacement for Word; if you have to learn a completely different way of doing things then it's not an easy replacement for Word.
c) 3/4 of the issues mentioned are clearly and undisputably bugs. You can't just brush them under the rug with "maybe do something different and you won't encounter them". It's not ridiculous to expect, when a program that claims to save and load .docx, that you'll get back the same document you saved.

* I don't think making 21 text boxes in the place where the 21 labels go is anything but the most straightforward way, but I'm open to being corrected.

I don't have a good grasp on your actual requirements, but to me it sounds like your label issue could be easily resolved by using tables rather than text boxes (not just in Libre Office, but in Microsoft Office as well).
Text boxes are really just a meme. I can't think of a single professional looking application for them.

OP here again. I am going to update all my drivers again and hope for the best. I am going to try making changes to my power settings since it only turns off when I am usually working, like using Word, on the internet, etc. So I wonder if it's related.
