Hi, kind of a dumb question but simple for internet domain people. This link is to an extremely specific page, an anime convention from 2006. I don't think it has any other purpose or main page. Only 2006. My question is how has this page and domain survived this long? Does a webpage stay so long as no one wants that domain? Or does someone obsessively pay for this every month / year? Really interested how this page is up despite being completely irrelevant and not particularly significant anymore.

Someone has to register the domain and that costs an annual fee (typically on the order of 20 bucks per year), though some registars allow you to pay several years in advance. The domain is basically just the name though. Beyond that you need a server that hosts your crap. That can run you anywhere from completely free (if you already have a server for other purposes, if you're at a university IT department, etc) to a few bucks per month for a low traffic site.

So as long as someone pays the fees it's more a question of whether someone actively goes and deletes the stuff. It won't disappear by itself.

There is also a mechanism called whois that allows you to find out details about a website. Let's do that for yours:
kumoricon.org was first registered 2003-05-05 and would next expire 2023-05-05 unless renewed (since that is exactly 20 years it's hard to tell whether they pay annually or if someone paid 10 years in advance in 2013). The site is registered to an organization called Altonimbus Entertainment from Oregon USA, so likely it auto-renews and some corporation just keeps paying the invoice they get every year without anyone questioning it (they might have dozens or hundreds of domains). Their registar is gkg.net where a .org runs you $12.98 per year, though they might of course get some kind of bulk discount.

Dammit now I feel absolutely dumb. Yes, It occured to me that the 2006 page was part of a parent page that is still used and trafficked, but i didn't notice that in the link and in my brief look at the page i didn't see a link to a main page, although i must admit I'm phone posting right now and really tired.

Wow, that's a lot of cool information anon I appreciate it. I've always wondered some of those things like if you can pay for a 10 year rent, or if large entities payroll smaller sites. I guess all my questions are now answered. Thank you for your help both of you.
