Is there no way to stop W10 from downloading updates? I've tried a bunch of things from searches and I still keep getting them

Don't connect it to the internet.
If you somehow manage to turn off windows update, you'll just end up with an "automatic update" from some guy in romania.

Check out O&O ShutUp10. I've been using it for a long ass time and I haven't updated once. It also lets you disable other w10 spyware.

I've found in the past that the Home version of Windows likes to switch auto updates back to On, so maybe switching to Education or Pro might help as well.

I meant WindowsSpyBlocker actually, but I use privatezilla as well. Windoze seems to revert the telemetry after a restart/shutdown, so you have to disable it in privatezilla each time. But WSB update blocking works so well I even forgot I had it turned on for 6 months. I tried all kinds of workarounds to get an update because sound drivers were fucked, I tried clean slate registry fixes etc. (to my understanding that's one step off factory reset) and I couldn't get updates to work. Then I slapped my forehead "it's fucking windows spy blocker". It works that well. On Github too

I did a chess.com analysis and it said mate in 6 but there were quite a few non-check moves so how is that possible to determine mate when the opponent is as dumb as me?

You first shutdown then disable the windows update service. Then you delete the file(s) associated with it including the entries in the registry. I don't remember what all i deleted so that's all I can tell you.

You can do this via group policy.
Win + R, then enter "gpedit.msc" to open the group policy editor.
Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Update -> Configure Automatic Updates
I like to have this set to just notify. Which you can do, if you change it from "Not Configured" to "Enabled". You'll then be able to configure automatic updates in the options below. You can also just set it to disabled, which will entirely disable automatic updates.

No additional software needed.

Note that group policy is not available on Home, and both Home and Pro (and probably Enterprise* and Education) ignore this setting for "important" (i.e. security) updates.

* you should be using WSUS if you want to deliberately delay/disable updates on Pro and Enterprise.

I have security updates waiting right now. I'm pretty sure it doesn't even check if you disable. Not sure this is the case.
