Mecha anime of my liking

Please rec me a mech anime/manga/vn with at least some of the following
>heavy mechas (as opposed to flying/acrobatic mechas)
>adult protagonist (will tolerate teen if no other option)
>ground based battles
>war plot with optional politics

I've seen and liked:
>Patlabor series and movies
>Front Mission (the absolute GOAT right there)
>Muv Luv
>Flag

I've seen a little of Votoms but wasn't liking the 70's "the incredible Hulk" plot

You basically covered most of it, and you're frankly better off looking for Western material if you want that sort of stuff, Japan is way more into Gundam-like robots. Speaking of Gundam though, you may find Gundam 08th MS Team a rare example of a more down-to-earth military robot anime, despite being set in the same time and universe as the original Gundam.
I can't recall any obvious masterpieces right now, but if you remove the adult protagonist requirement (it's anime after all), I remember Argevollen being a ground-based war (only the main robot is agile, others are pretty bulky), there's Break Blade where the main robot can jump far, but otherwise all of the robots feel very heavy-duty (it's fantasy, but it's a ground war plot), Galient is worth mentioning as another fantasy ground mecha show. You'll get more mileage from asking /m/ though, I like robots but I'm no expert.

I mean going by your description and stuff you like, technically Gravion has what you're looking for in a very obtuse fashion. Stuff by Leiji Matsumoto would be up your alley. There's also Dragonar, Blue Gender, Viper's Creed (not as political but there is military conspiracy elements), Expelled From Paradise, Unit Pandora, Sakugan (main duo are a father and daughter), and fuck it I'll include Dunbine.

OP said the MC has to be an adult, Dougram and Gasaraki have teens. I hope OP understands that he's missing out on putting up an artificial barrier like Escaflowne, Zoids, Giant Gorg, Galient, and the Aquarion trilogy. Now if he said "can be teens but nothing school centric" there'd be plenty of recs like Kishin Corps that'd be perfect for him.
