You can do it without a backup drive if you know what you're doing or use third-party software, but you should have a backup anyway and this method is foolproof.

Make sure IF (input, where your OS partition is located) and OF (output, where it's supposed to be written to) are not switched

Nobody mentioned BIOS drive settings, which if you clone Windows you'll see cause a problem. Just make sure if the OS was installed with SATA or AHCI or RAID set that it's set the same when you boot on the new system.

Every SSD manufacturer offers migration tools on their website. They want you to upgrade, so they make it as easy as possible. I've done it three times so far for myself and family and it's always been pretty much a one-click solution. You boot from the OS you want to clone, attach the target SSD (via SATA or via a USB bridge) and run the tool.

That's because
a) using a Windows USB to restore a system image backup takes care of this automatically
b) the same computer will have the same BIOS settings before and after you swap a disk, you thread-not-reader

No. Any modern disk has 4k blocks; this is pointless write amplification.

And anyways you should be using something like gparted, which benchmarks the optimum block size before it copies.

Have a go with ddrescue next time you do this. As well as having a nicer UI (with a progress bar!), it supports resuming, sparse files, and so on.

Sparse files aren't just for saving space on disk images: if you're bottlenecked on output, and you know the destination is full of zeroes, then you can write it out sparse for a big speedup.
