So I got a nice free trinitron and it looks amazing. Sexy perfect picture quality for stuff like sega saturn games. Am I going overboard if I want to get a VCR for it? I haven't used a VCR since like 2005 and I honestly don't really remember what the picture quality was like on it. But I have some old VHS tapes I wouldn't mind watching again and I like my cozy nostalgic corner of my room.

No, totally get a VCR.
On top of all the benefits you described, it's reasonably cheap to get a USB capture card and digitise old VHS tapes. Just remember to deinterlace them or use and interlaced codec, or you go to jaggy hell.

Another thing you can do is get a Matrox card or a jailbroken Wii/Xbox for emulation with native 480i output. If you've got a Japanese or European Trinitron, you can probably get RGB into it, which is as lossless as it gets: the RGB signal gets DAC'd inside the console, amplified in the TV, and directly drives the electron guns.

Looked up one of these online and I'm not terribly sure how it works. You plug the cables from your VCR straight into the device, which connects to your PC vis usb, and the footage plays from the VCR on your monitor?

Yes, but also you can save it, then use Handbrake to make it into a mp4.

On recording programs like OBS Studio, you can choose the output video file type, and set it to mp4 if you want to skip the Handbrake step.

Though that does get you a single-pass constant bitrate encode, which is lower quality at the same filesize compared to saving the file, doing an analysis pass, then a variable bitrate encode.

It is more convenient though.

The one i bought just plugs into the vcr or whatever and records straight to a micro sd card. Has a smol screen to watch it on and change some settings.
It works ok i guess, unlike the vcr i bought .
