Detroit Metal City (big maybe). Its more of a comedy but its kinda dark. Its been a while I've watched it but I remember being about some guy who wanted make a career being a pop artist who got sucked into being the front man of a metal band. Its a really short anime.

It kinda does but the MC isnt that big of a total loser if thats what you are looking for. Both anime are about young adults who face the reality of living in the real world and having their dreams crushed. I think the MC from NHK had the delusion of becoming some hot shot video game developer.

Get the original book, the anime felt like a tone deaf joke after it. The Box Man by Kobo Abe was weird but good, and studio 4°C got Genius Party and more if you want to dig deeper into mindfucks. Satoshi Kon can be even weirder, not sure if up your alley.
