Before everything went mainstream and centralized, people would make their own sites and forums for their projects instead of using Reddit/Twitter/Discord. Had dedicated teams that worked on things. They even had sister sites that they collaborated/rivaled with. Actually got shit done. If you wanted to participate, you could just ask and show work. The alternative today would be to find some page on Reddit dedicated to a specific effort, to stumble upon some site by exploring, or to get invited by a user from one of these big sites.
