According to Shaykh Jad al Haq, the Mufti of al-Azhar:
>Playing the tambourine and other musical instruments on special occasions is allowed by unanimous agreement.>Listening to music, attending musical gatherings, and studying music of all genres and instruments is allowed as long as it is not accompanied with immoral and sinful acts, or used as a pretext to incite people towards haram (prohibited) behaviour, and it does not preoccupy a person away from observing the obligatory acts of worship (al-wajibat).https://islamictext.wordpress.com/music-azhar-fatwa/However, this is just one opinion and there are other scholars who say that music is haraam whether it is accompanied by other sinful things or not. And this is certainly the more convincing opinion based on the cited evidence.
>Musical instruments that are solely designed for entertainment are unlawful, with or without singing. However, to play the tambourine (daf) at weddings (and other occasions according to some fuqaha) will be permissible.https://islamqa.org/hanafi/qibla-hanafi/36662/music-and-singing-a-detailed-fatwa/As Muslims we hear and we obey, if it comes to us that something has been forbidden by God and his Messenger then we refrain from doing it. We don't pick and choose what we like from the revelation as the Christians do.
And consider the great reward for someone who gives up something for the sake of Allah. The Prophet said (“Verily, you will never leave anything for the sake of Allah Almighty but that Allah will replace it with something better for you.” Musnad Ahmad 23074)
And it must be mentioned that Islam enjoins obedience and kindness to your parents, regardless whether you're older than 18 or not and whether you live in your own house or not, so it will be better for you to obey them than to obey the ignorant advice in this thread.
