also is every thread sent to the archives page once it expires?

There can only be 150 threads on a board. When you post in a thread you bump it, making it go to the top. When a new thread gets made, the one at the bottom, which is the one to be bumpped the longest time ago, gets archived or deleted, depending on the board. Archived threads last around 7 or more days but this may vary by board or by the speed of the board, not too sure about this. You can't see all archived posts in the archive section, only recent ones.
You can only bump your own thread once with the same IP. You can post without bumping by typing "sage" in the options field. Moderators can "autosage" threads, making them unable to be bumpped, making them get bumpped off the board faster.
There are plenty of external archives but they don't last forever. You can see the ones still alive here >>1296569 along with the boards they archive.
What brings you here?

The "archives" aren't official or in any way connected to 4chan, they're just a random site that reads 4chan and saves all the posts.

If no-one's interested in doing it, it doesn't get done. And apparently it's an expensive and thankless task.

many things are against the rules and everybody does it nevertheless. you can always tell somebody the thread sucks and youre not bumping it. it wont stop retards from bumping it and replying to blatant bait though.
also you have to set your filters up, 70% of this cesspool is garbage bait/shill/spam and/or bot threads. and maybe try 4chanX, it greatly improves browsing the website

A good way to tell how bad something is is if you can report someone for it. If there's a category for it on the report page, it's probably pretty bad.

Archives sites are run by 3rd parties not 4chan. Sometimes due to either a lack of funding/interest or legal issues regarding the content(especially sites that archive /b/) the archive sites shutdown (like fgts.jp).If you scroll to the bottom of this page it gives you a good idea of what sites archive what.

BTW im assuming this is not the case for the official archives right? and if i am correct every thread on these boards such as hr, gif and hc will go to the archive page right? or does someone have to actually save the thread or something for it to end up in the archive section ?

Maybe I wasn't clear enough, it gets automatically archived if the board has an archive or it gets deleted if the board doesn't have an archive. It stays there for a few days and then gets deleted.
