my dad just came screaming at my door at 7am because his laptop won't connect to the wifi and he says I did something because this shit keeps showing up on the wifi list with my initials
what the fuck is this shit? it keeps selecting to connect automatically

I've gone into my router settings and the 2.4ghz band is not activating no matter what settings I change, I've restarted the whole router and that band doesn't even show up anymore when the 5ghz wifi still does

Replace the router and don't allow any remote access to it. That's what I did. Problem solved.

the 2.4ghz band just refuses to activate even after toggling it on and off and resetting, I have no idea what the problem is or what these chink access points are that are showing up
the 5ghz still works fine

I just clicked factory reset and now the other band is working again, but bizarrely it kept the separated wifi band names I had set and the modified router access password I set up even after it came back on

I signed up for fiber years ago, pretty much right when they ran it in the neighborhood
I've read you can request to have it replaced but I don't remember what the newest model is and also don't remember how you're supposed to do it, apparently they won't just do it if you ask or some shit

any idea what the deal with the chink wifi signals and the 2.4ghz band being borked without a factory reset could be?
also why did the factory reset keep the router password I set and the split wifi bands I renamed

Best thing is to use something like nmap to portscan the router, it should find any ports that aren't closed, http is perfectly normal since it has a web interface.
The article suggests port 28 for telnet which is traditionally 23.
If you're planning to half ass this you can use putty to try to connect to ports 23 and 28 in telnet mode and see if either are open, if it does anything but refuse or otherwise decline to connect you have a problem.
If you can grab a clean copy of the firmware you could perhaps get away with just installing that, there is typically some sort of shitty update firmware option in there somewhere to upload a .bin or whatever to the router. Factory reset option might be intercepted if its not actually wiping shit.
