You can manipulate RGBA values directly with Python and PIL.
If you wanna do it with an editor, dunno about GIMP, but in Photopea:
- Open the image
- Layer / Raster Mask / From Transparency
That takes the alpha and puts into a separate mask.
- Click on the layer in Layers so you're working on it instead of the mask.
- Select all (ctrl+a), Edit / Filll... Choose "Custom" and click on the square that appears to select your color and click on Okay.
Now the layer is filled with your color, but the transparency is preserved thanks to the mask.
So you have the original image with the same alpha, but a different color.
- To export, File / Export as / PNG
>I tried using Colorizing option from Colors menu but it didnt seem to do anything,It didn't do anything because black stays black with Colorize.
Only grey values get colorized.
