Simplest and easiest ebook reader

I like to think I'm not a tech iliterate retard, but somehow I have never needed to use ebook readers until now, and I can't find one that isn't a github gizmo mess or a free-with-ads-every-5-seconds one.

Is there any really simple, free reader for windows? The only functionality I want from it is to open and visualize the damn files, nothing more

SumatraPDF has you covered. If you need library functionality, Calibre is a little more complicated but still just werks.

This is very common among linuxfags. This is a way for them to feel superior. They don't give a fuck about end users. Then they genuinely act like they don't understand why nobody uses their operating systems.

Try it yourself. The reason you can't distribute a binary for "linux" is that "linux" is hundreds of different operating systems that happen to share the same name, and aren't binary-compatible with each other.
Did you think that building the binary was just a hurdle put there to annoy you, and every time the same binary came out?

You have to statically link your dependencies and ship all of them with your software. That's literally the standard practice on every sane OS, it's just freetards who are opposed to it because muh unix philosophy is more sacred than anything and that says it's le bad, so they just follow it blindly instead of making sure things just work.
If I were to release consumer software for linux, I'd use electron.

No, absolutely not the case.
Run Windows 9x's notepad.exe on 11. Observe how:
- the binary is 56kb
- it has 11's rounded corners when you run it
- when you open a file, you get 11's file picker

None of this would be the case if 200MB+ of windows 9x were statically linked into notepad.exe. You can't just "ship the entire OS bro", this is why Docker, Flatpack, etc. are a thing.

That's not even software for linux, that's a website in a zip, which relies on the users having Chrome for it to use as a substitute operating system. This is exactly what the JRE was in the 2000's, everything moves in cycles, Electron is zoomer Java.

OP here, after trying to install Visual Studio and whatnot to compile it I figured out it was way easier to just convert the epubs into pdfs

Yeah, and when you open the file picker in a Win3.1 application on Windows 10, you don't get an error saying "Oops, we've deprecated that because we didn't feel like maintaining it :^)" but it actually works. The legacy calls are still available because MS bets on compatibility, and it pays off.
So yeah things like docker are the best you can do.

Actually Electron comes bundled with Chromium, so it doesn't rely on the user having it installed. You can make it portable for Linux. Chromium is the runtime environment for your program, but this is the only way you can achieve compatibility like Java without having to use Java.
The meme frameworks using webview are all prone to problems with dependencies, so shipping your own browser is a good idea.

You might actually be better installing the amazon appstore from the windows store and using an android app.
