Laptop HDD

I have an old laptop, but when I start it up, I get a screen that says
Check Cable Connection! No bootable device, insert boot disk and press any key.
When I check the Setup Utility, the HDD/SSD is not there but I think I'm able to hear the HDD spinning. What should I do?

Have you checked the interface cable? If it spins, probably only the power connector is connected.

2.5" disks have only ever had combined power/data connectors.

Are you sure you should be giving advice here?

Pull it out, whack it in a USB caddy, and see what it does in a known-good PC. If possible, read the SMART log.

If the disk is working, then you can use it to diagnose the laptop; if it isn't, then replace it and your laptop will be fixed.
