But I did look into it and it's not a very involved procedure. I just feel like there's still a lot that could go wrong.

I studied biology in undergrad and I don't recommend this. If you absolutely have to do it yourself though, topical lidocaine lotions are legal. I can't vouch for their strength nonetheless
