nah. made in abyss is written competently and goes to certain lengths to evoke emotions out of you and has some things to say about the nature of exploration and relationships. it's preachy and you may not have liked it but it definitely doesnt belong in the "mediocre" category by any measure

It's the first rule of advertising: identify the biggest deficiency your product has (terrible worldbuilding) and lie about it (twice an episode say the abyss is awesome and mysterious and interesting, when none of the episodes actually show this).

It would be great if it delivered what it promised, but it does not.

the animation doesnt make up for the sheer volume of "nothing" content in each episode. there's huge stretches where literally nothing happens between scenes, there's the professor and the cat where they're just kind of... interacting but not in any way that's meaningful? they're not being comedic, they're not making any sort of other point, they're just kind of hanging out and it's not clear why the show is showing it. a lot of the comedy in general is hit or miss, too-- the clips on youtube are hilarious but those are obviously the best ones in the whole show. it doesnt really have much to offer as a whole beyond those cherrypicked scenes

i found that it delivered pretty well on the premise of a survival adventure with mystery and action mixed in. it's not done yet so commenting on the mystery part is kind of stupid but the show shows the characters surviving, training to survive, interacting with the wildlife, encountering lots of different environments, all while sensically linking them together. i dont know why you think it has terribly worldbuilding when it's perfectly serviceable. i hope you have at least a couple of references that REALLY damn the show cause anything below "adequate" is going to need a lot of backing up

sounds like you just expected something different from what you got and that upset you. that doesnt make the show bad

The most mediocre anime I ever saw was Hand Maid May. The premise seems kinda interesting but it quickly devolves into another Love Hina rip off. Special shout out to Sakura Diaries for being just interesting enough to make me feel like I didn't waste my time watching it.
