1. Although some people are really mean, most are being ironic.
2. It depends on what you're posting. When I help people on /wsr/, they're usually very grateful. Interesting, on-topic comments are appreciated on most boards.
3. In real life, people are often polite but they stab you in the back. It is better to be rude and honest than being a slimey weasel.
I've done an experiment where I refused to utter any negativity in a thread. People tried to get a rise out of me, but I showed extreme patience and exhausted their capacity for meanness. If you're nice for long enough, eventually, people become nice. You have a lot more influence on others than you think.
