Obscure true crime case where National Guard/Army hunted perp

No.1444402 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
I saw a YouTube video for a true crime case a couple years ago, and I haven't been able to find the case or the video again no matter how hard I search.

It took place at most 1900-1960, but probably more like 1920-1955 if I had to narrow it down some.
Some guy in a wooded, mountainous region committed a bunch of armed robberies (if I recall) and just kept slipping away into the mountains. He may have ended up killing one or multiple people or even police officers in a robbery gone wrong, because the major detail I remember from this is that they brought out either the National Guard or the Army for the manhunt to sporadically fire artillery/mortars into the mountains in hopes of either getting him to surrender or somehow hitting him by chance.
I'm pretty sure he ended up getting killed or arrested by police rather than the Army/National Guard, but it was memorable as one of the only times I'm aware of the US military firing artillery at it's own citizens.
