If you buy a telephone from a major carrier company they will give you a phone number for FREE to go along with it.

I tried using my actual phone number and it didn't work for some reason. Would a prepaid SIM card work?

I had this issue too, I couldn't get verification codes. I have an iphone so I don't know if this will work otherwise, but make sure these settings are enabled-
In settings, under Messages:
>iMessage
>Send as SMS
In settings, under Phone:
>Wi-Fi Calling
And make sure your phone number is set up correctly.
If you don't have a SIM card you might need to get one though.
