What's a good router for security?

I wanted to buy a router for better security instead of using the wifi router the ISP supplied. I'm not sure how secure it is, as I understand a lot of routers ISPs use arent that secure.

You could use custom firmware from DD-wrt or tomato. Installation is different for each model from easy couple clicks to programming it

Does your ISP require you to use the router they gave you? Some fiber optic companies in the USA require their router for TV service or if they use coax instead of Ethernet to get from the ONT to the router.
