That person then takes the item to the Fedex Store to be packed to prevent breakage and then put into a double box if fragile before shipping. Why use a "fedex store" (or similar)? This reduces the work your friend has to do as you already imposed on him. Of course the Fedex store charges a premium for packing and boxing up the object.
history: there used to be lots of package and mail stores which gave home businesses a non-residential mailing address as well as a "post office type box" to receive mail. They also packaged goods and sent them. UPS then bought up many of these disparate mom&pop shipping shops and standardized their processes and look. Then Fedex came and bought the entire chain from UPS and made them much less nice. <-- my viewpoint
