Drive Recovery

My external HDD got the click of death. When I plug it in, the Windows plug in sound plays, but it doesn't show up on the file explorer or disk management and it starts clicking. I tried opening it up to see if there were mechanical issues or scratches, but I didn't see anything wrong there. Are there any fixes or sofware that can help me recover my data without spending hundreds of dollars? As I type this, my HDD is sitting in the freezer, but I doubt it'll work.

I don't have any advice for you really though. But if you do give up with the external case, try taking it out and fucking with it through a sata connector.

Click of death is pretty bad just be patient though. You can get lucky and recover some if not all on drives that kind of just sporadically revive and then don't again. Just make sure if you do happen to get lucky and cooperate, you want enough space available to copy that stuff do as quick as you can without interruptions or that drive might not come back on again.

I would suggest Seagate externals though man, because WD had done that to me and so far Seagate hasn't.

I've had Seagates fail but oddly enough I haven't yet had a WD fail and I am running some WD. I would look at model rather than just blanket ban manufacturer. Despite the Seagate failures I'm running a couple of Barracuda externals so I'm not hating on SG.

As in you tried unscrewing the case and looked at the platter? That was not a good idea unless you were in a clean room with the proper tools to swap the failed hardware with working hardware. The clicking is already almost certainly mechanical issue so you didn't have to open it. The only non-mechanical, and I'll include bad power as mechanical, reason I can think of for clicking is if the service area is unreadable, but even then it could be mechanical due to damage and not corrupted data.

The only thing you can do is, as >>1470461 says. You need a big empty drive on as fast an an interface as possible which probably means internal connectors and you want your failed drive on a fast interface as well. I'd do it in Linux and for that you'll need to install software capable of reading NTFS drives. You can look up a lot of information about using Linux for data recovery and the tutorials will be better than anything you can get on 4chan. This is very likely a one shot deal because like the other anon says, it might not come back on again.

But, data recovery experts will tell you you've already done the wrong thing by opening it up. They'll also tell you that powering it on is the wrong thing to do. If you are contemplating spending the money on recovery because the data are that important, don't mess around, take it to the data recovery shop because the more you fiddle with it the harder it becomes. A failing drive could even scrape the heads on the disk and good luck then.

If the data are important enough that you'd pay, do that now, it won't get any cheaper and it could get worse to the point of being unrecoverable outside the most specialised of labs.

I recovered data from a dead drive by putting it in the freezer for a few hours.

But now I always have a few backups.
