What are some iconic and influential japanese manga or media franchises that are unknown, more obscure or significantly less known in the general western anime/manga fandom you would recommend?

Off the top of my head, I've been reading or plan to read:
>Various Kazuhiro Fujita works
>Various Jiro Taniguchi works
>Hoshin Engi
>3x3 Eyes
>Guyver
>Kakugo No Susume (Read this one and had a blast)
>Spriggan (Read this one too, pulpy but mostly enjoyable)
>Bastard!! (Read this 2 times, it's legit great up to around vol 20 then gets bad quickly)
>Five Star Stories (I'm a classic western sci-fi lit reader and I'm trying my best to read as many good sci-fi manga as possible)
>Getter Saga (heard many good things about this one)
Not sure about including Fujita or Taniguchi since they're actually pretty popular in places like France/Italy, though they're absolutely unknown in America.
