Afaik, almost all the things involving numerical methods use it in one way or another (blas,lapack,maxima,ratlab,octane or any other).
But I can't land an interesting idea, there are a few but are trited or seldom I know how it's going to end. (i.e.: trying to use it as some calculator the developed software is going to be an octave or matlab thing, bah...).
I don't care if finally the idea proposed is right or wrong. The important thing is do something meaningful, the way to do it and to have fun with it.
