It's incredibly easy these days to switch
I have no idea why your new HDD is relevant as a reason for switching
If you give more information about what you do with your PC that will help to get better suggestions
Most Linux distros are very similar, but sometimes certain requirements will make some more suitable and others less suitable
I'm a long time Debian user. Works very well for me. Not the most beginner friendly though (although, as I wrote above, it's all much easier these days).
Fedora is a good distro IMO and much more cutting edge compared to Debian.
I don't like Ubuntu, but it's a reasonable jumping off point (a lot of people start on Ubuntu then filter off toward another distro)
I highly recommend avoiding meme shite like Arch Linux at this point.
Don't waste any time trying to get advice from /g/
I also recommend watching some youtube vids on 'desktop environments' (DE).
A lot of people talk about distros and review distros when in fact they're simply talking about the DE
Very generally, if you like windows layout you might like KDE, if you like MacOS you might like gnome.
You can typically use either (e.g. Fedora's default is gnome but they have a version with KDE too)
