My local police department, as many other police departments across the country, have WiFi hack detection equipment to triangulate on whoever is committing wire theft. If you hacked the password and used the password for access, my state legislature modernized the laws to call that wire fraud (use of falst identity in commission of a wire theft crime).
It matters because crimes with "Fraud" in their name legally disqualifies you from many jobs. It also prohibits you from receiving certain job licenses and permits from the state and county governments.
I have a monitoring program watching my WiFi for hacker attempts and usage. If I ever found someone, I would let them continue, but contact my police department to come catch the person.
