Hello,

There are two more months before Brighter Shores releases and I was wondering if you could please recommend your favourite games belong. Any genre is fine, just preferably titles on steam. I don't like games that immediately overwhelm the player with the size of their world.
Minimal smut and minimal blacks please.

I have an anti-recommendation for Control. The telekinesis looks and feels great. Everything else I thought was so incredibly boring.

Persona 5 Royal is the best game ever made, but it's also by far the longest story - of an media - I've ever enjoyed. At about 300 hours, you won't finish it in two months unless you're playing 5 hours a day, every day.

Thanks for your Persona recommendation. I remember there being a lot of hype around the game with the vertical platforms and the sheep and the blonde girl who mysteriously appears in the protagonist's life, but that doesn't seem to look like some of the persona titles I've seen on steam. Could you fill me in on what I've otherwise missed if you have time please?

I'll give you an introduce to Persona 5's premise:

Persona 5 is a story about a high-school student in Japan who is arrested and convicted for assault. He's sentenced to one year of probation, kicked out of his high school, and sent to live in Tokyo for one year.

He quickly realizes he has the power to enter a parallel reality called the 'Metaverse,' and he can bring other humans into it as well. The Metaverse is a world built by the collective human consciousness - a world where emotions are power. It's also a very dangerous place, where human emotions and ideas manifest as monsters. However, when a person confronts and accepts their 'true self' in the Metaverse, they awaken to a powerful guardian which grants them superhuman strength and agility as well as magical powers - a guardian called a Persona. Using a Persona, a person can fight and survive in the Metaverse, although they lose their superhuman powers when they return to the real world.

The protagonist quickly realizes that since the Metaverse is built from the human mind, when certain actions are done in the Metaverse, it has an effect on people in the real world. I'm not going to tell you how exactly, but they realize they can improve the world and punish evildoers by entering the Metaverse. So they decide to become vigilantes - normal high school students by day, and warriors in the Metaverse when school is out.

The big 'gimmick' of Persona is that although the characters go on an incredible adventures with magical abilities, their lives in the real world don't stop. They still have their lives and responsibilities as high school students. So about half the game takes place in the Metaverse, and about half takes place in the real world. And the central gameplay of the real world is using your limited time to squeeze the most benefit out of every day. You have one year to accomplish everything you want. You can study, watch television, play video games, read books. You can work a part time job, socialize with friends, work out at the gym, relax at a sauna, eat at restaurants, play darts or pool, meditate, etc. All of these activities offer different benefits for your life in the real world and your adventures in the Metaverse, and it's your job to decide how to spend your limited time.

Persona 5 has, hands down, no question about it, the best cast of "heroic adventure" characters I've ever encountered. Characters who enter a new world, become heroes, and go on an incredible adventure and become lifelong friends. They're just awesome. The women in particular (in comparison to a lot of the bullshit we see in Western media these days) are beautiful and badass and an absolute pleasure to spend time with.

It's an incredibly long story, but it's not like Skyrim or something where there's 10 hours of 'story' and then you spend 500 hours running around caves. There are new characters, new challenges, new twists, and new abilities introduced all the way to the very end. I don't know if you play RPGs, but I would guess Persona 5 has about twice as much dialogue as the entire Mass Effect trilogy - *combined.* It's an adventure story, a heroic story, a heist story, a romance, a mystery, a slice of life about great friends working together, fighting together, investigating together, making decisions together, relaxing together, and celebrating together. It also has some of the best music I've ever heard in a video game.

Thank you for posting with so much effort anon, the game on it's face is not entirely interesting to me but your passion for it has convinced me. May I ask, is each game in the series more-or-less standalone, despite some recurring characters/cameos maybe? And is each game in the franchise similar?. I don't play many RPGs, but I'm picky so I won't bother elaborating :P

They're absolutely standalone, with basically zero connection to previous games. You should NOT start with any other Persona games. You should start with Persona 5 Royal.

I should say that it's a story that (like most great stories, I think) does require some patience. If you're a person who is constantly thinking "Fuck this story bullshit, let me shoot people already," this definitely might not be the game for you. It may be a little big for your first real RPG, but then again, I introduced it to my mom who has never touched a video game before and it took her an entire year in real life to finish, but she loved it.

Make absolutely sure that it's Persona 5 ROYAL. NOT regular 'Persona 5.' Royal is the updated, improved, and extended version.

It's just one of those "X crawled so Y could run" situations. It took a couple of tries for the developers to really get things right. They actually release a remake of Persona 3 (originally from 2006) earlier this year that I've been playing. And it's just...not as good. The story is weaker and thinner, the characters do much less and experience much less, the gameplay is much less developed.

Believe me, you're not going to miss 3 or 4 one tiny bit. (And the series basically starts with Persona 3, 1 and 2 were basically short experimental games back in the 90s.) The story doesn't reference them at all, none of the characters re-appear. Persona 5 Royal is a perfect place to start a new story and a new adventure.

My favorite to play? Probably The Binding Of Isaac. As for a game that had the most effect on me, though: Yume Nikki is technically on Steam. 2004 RPG Maker game that focuses on a young girl choosing to explore the worlds in her dreams. Hugely influential to indie games as a whole.
