AI Music Generation?

It seems nowadays that AI is a solved problem - stable diffusion and your choice of front-end for images, and chatbot frameworks are a dime a dozen, but either I'm out of the loop or there's just been no progress: what's the state of free & open source, locally hostable AI music generation?

AI makes new images or sounds by refining fragment data from the originals. This doesn't work well with music because you end up copying the same repeating segments of other songs stitched without any understanding of what makes them work together. You can tag an image to describe what's going on in the picture, but you cannot tag a music sheet to explain how the notes are forming a melody. There's been progress on AI singing on tune and to replace someone's voice in a song, but creating original AI music that's not garbage hasn't worked very well because music is subjective while images and voice are objective and can be defined and described.

Fair enough, but that's what people said about image generation when it was in its infancy, and what people said about voice replication when it was in its infancy, etc, etc. I think, at best, it's a matter of time.

No one naturally has talent.
You just have to study and put in the time, which I get is daunting and hard to do but it will produce infinitely better results.

Yeup, and some people want to put their time toward something else, while still being able to undertake creative endeavors all on their own. Besides, it does take some amount of talent to get a computer to do what you want it to do.
