Idle laptop making thumping/banging noise

I have a laptop that I haven't used in about a year. For the past few days, it's been making these weird banging/thumping noises. I don't know what this means. I've unplugged it, but I don't know if that will help. I'd appreciate some advice.

I'm on the laptop now. Now that I'm closer, it sounds more like a clicking, hitching sound. I don't know if that helps.

if it is the hdd, it's not too bad of an issue since the solution is pretty straightforward:
1) get a new drive; make sure it's 2.5 inch (for laptops)
2) clone old drive to new drive
3) swap out old drive for new drive
get an ssd as the replacement and you can think of it as a hardware upgrade

I cant create a thread so I’ll post randomly on one, how do I break this thing without proof? My current job sucks, I just found a better one and I’m starting in 5 days, need to break this one so I can lay back until I can quit for good

OP here. I've copied all my essential stuff to an external drive and shut the computer off. Hopefully being shut down will prevent it from getting any worse, and I couldn't stand the noise anyway. I'll just have to take it to a shop to get it fixed, since I don't know shit about computers.

Look at your HDD size, buy one the same size or bigger. You have a laptop, so buy a usb/SATA HDD adapter like this piece of shit

Use Macrium Reflect to clone your drive to the new one. Then pop your new drive into your PC and it'll just werk. If you bought a larger HDD, extend your partition to use the extra space.
Also you can slap your apparently dying HDD in that enclosure and start filling it with porn, maybe it'll last for ten years
