sometimes when I open a board from my bookmarks it opens in catalog view and I don't want it to do that

Not sure, in tampermonkey you can see the userscript's storage. Can you do that in violentmonkey too? I would see if the Index Mode is set to "catalog"

Everyone on 4chan seems to use it over tampermonkey since it's open source or something.
Maybe try looking at the local storage of the 4chan page in devtools. On chromium, it wasn't stored there (only "4chan X.boardConfig" and some other values) but maybe on firefox it'll be there? idk

Found it - in violentmonkey, press edit and go to the values tab. You should see "4chan X.Index Mode" in there if it's set (you pressed the catalog or index button or set the index mode to infinite, or paged, or all threads)
