The Brother company didn't try to make a proprietary system to prevent use of 3rd party toner. Furthermore, the company continued to make a low-cost basic laser printer and not just expensive feature-rich fancy ones. So there was a lot to like about the ethics of that manufacturer from way back then.
Companies can change. I don't know how they are now. I've always been inkjet because I need the specific high resolution ink photographs on occasion. If I need laser or even color laser prints, I can go to the public library and get a few free color prints there with my library card. Or buy multiple color laser prints for a tiny fee charged to token points that I can buy a bunch of with a debit card. The library really does not want to touch physical cash money whenever it can avoid it.
