I am a Zoomer who grew up in the public school system looking for a kids folktale series. I read a book series made for kids between elementary school and middle school (prior to 2012 at the latest) about folk stories retold for kids. I can't remember the name nor the names of the stories or such.
It is NOT "Scary Stories to tell in the dark" by Schwartz. But it was similar in what it did. And I remember some of the stories could be quite gruesome. It was partially illustrated with decent illustrations on some pages to break up the reading. The stories were sometimes from other parts of the world aside from America or the west because I swear there were stories from east Asia inside of it. I think there was some story of an Asian guy running away from a beast in the jungle in one story.
So again its not Schwartz because I definitely love his work. It was illustrated. It was provided in schools for kids. And it could be gruesome and dark. They were not full novels with no illustrations. They were essentially anthologies and collections of folktales retold for kids/teens. I am also not referring to the 'Great Illustrated Classics' series either nor Goosebumps.
