there are two sci-fi (TV?) movies I remember watching on TV in the late 2000s but I can't for the love of God find their names.
in the first movie the hero is an archaeologist (or linguist? historian?). alien structures that look like giant rock funnels appear all over Earth. the aliens look like 1-metre-tall floating squids and they communicate by writing Greek letters in the air. the hero is the only one who can understand their language. yes, I know this sounds EXACTLY like Arrival (2016) except I'm certain I watched this movie and its sequel before 2010.
in the sequel the hero returns. he has been chased by a cabal who has killed his wife and wants to capture his son who has alien powers. two alien funnels reappear on Earth, one in France and the other in Russia. they have growing opposite "auras", the French one heals, the Russian one kills. they say that when the "auras" meet the planet will be destroyed. the hero's son is the only one who can save Earth thanks to his powers.
both movies looked like high-budget TV movies very similar to those produced by the Sci-Fi Channel in the 2000s, but with better CGI. the movies were dubbed in my country so they might possibly be foreign (German? Russian?) although they seemed American.
